Ghana U20 Coach eager to see Jerry Afriyie get Black Stars chance
Desmond Ofei, the head coach of Ghana’s U20 male national team, the Black Satellites, is keen to see his star striker, Jerry Afriyie, get a chance with the Black Stars in the not-too-distant future.
The Thoughts FC player was named both the Best Player of the tournament and the Top Scorer at the just-concluded 2024 WAFU B U20 Championship in Togo.
Afriyie was a key figure for Ghana as they finished second in the tournament and secured their spot in the 2025 U20 Africa Cup of Nations.
He was also instrumental in the Black Satellites’ gold-medal win at the 2023 African Games in March, scoring the winning goal.
“With Jerry, we’re really happy because he’s a very hungry lad, down to earth, and you know, he’s a goal scorer, so I’m really happy for him,” Ofei said.
“His future looks very, very bright, and it’s up to him to take the next step, hopefully to Europe, to join a good team where he can play, and hopefully get an opportunity with the Black Stars.”
Jerry Afriyie scored five goals in five games, including a consolation in the final against Nigeria.
He also netted a brace against Benin in the opening game and scored in the final group match against Togo.
